This famous two-masted schooner was designed by the renowned shipbuilder Jeremiah Burnham. The FLYING FISH was launched in 1860 in Essex, Massachusetts. For over 20 years, this design dominated the market schooner class and many other shipbuilders used it as a model for their new buildings. The FLYING FISH was one of the fastest ships afloat and brought its cargo and catches of fish into harbour in record time. In those days speed was money.

The races in which the Flying Fish took part must have been very exciting, as they were first of all described by Kipling and later featured in the film "Captain Courageous". The FLYING FISH and with her the fishermen of Gloucester, have not been banished to an obscure past. To this day the schooner remains a very popular model which is frequently built.
